Finding Purpose In Your Career

If we spend about 90,000 hours of our life at work, feeling fulfilled and having purpose at work is essential to our overall happiness.

As I've learned, discovering your career purpose can significantly elevate the quality and depth of life.

A wise teacher once told me that when you find your purpose, you embrace a different level of existence, and life takes on new meaning. Conversely, when we feel adrift without a sense of purpose, life can become a challenging and monotonous experience.

Stop going through the motions at work

We may feel like we're just going through the motions, with a sense of time slipping away. But deep down, we know there's a more fulfilling way to work and live, where we eagerly anticipate each new day.

Purpose is a recurring topic of discussion, and its role in living a fulfilling and worthwhile life is increasingly recognised.

In fact, for many individuals, finding a sense of purpose and fulfilment at work has become more important than monetary gain or other external factors.

It's worth noting that I don't suggest that these aspects are mutually exclusive; on the contrary, I believe that aligning with our purpose can lead to even greater financial success and the achievement of greater goals.

Ultimately, people simply want to lead the best lives they can, and the pursuit of career purpose is an integral part of this journey.

Identifying and Embracing Your Career Purpose

Two key points are essential in understanding career purpose.

First, context is crucial when it comes to purpose.

A major pitfall is the belief that we must seek purpose from a starting point of not already having it.

Many people feel they lack purpose in their careers, leading to a sense of emptiness and monotony.

It's essential not to fall into this trap because, as I often say, we've been on a purpose, serving some purpose, since the day we were born.

We're always on purpose in various ways, even if we aren't consciously aware of it.

Instead of searching for an external purpose, understanding how you are already on purpose is a powerful starting point.

Therefore, I recommend that people start by recognising the purpose they are already serving.

Finding Fulfilment and Purpose in Your Career

Secondly, instead of searching externally, we need to look within ourselves to recognise our purpose.

It's about understanding how you are already on purpose and then consciously increasing that sense of purpose.

Purpose is closely aligned with fulfilment. Therefore, I encourage people to stop looking outside themselves and focus on what fulfils them most at work.

Ask yourself, "What fulfils me the most?" and you will discover your purpose. Don't judge it; just look for what brings you the most fulfilment.

When you find what fulfils you, you'll be motivated to do it more and more. It’s important that if we just stop judging who we are and what we're doing and actually just take an honest look, we will see the things we feel called to do because we're already doing them.

Many individuals may feel purposeless or believe they lack a purpose in their career, but that's simply untrue.

Each person has a unique purpose or something that fulfils them. When I say "unique," I mean that we are all different, and we each have something distinct that we are meant to do.

It's important to note that discovering your career purpose can lead your life in a different direction.

There are questions to ask and an inner search to embark on to find it, and this is one of the most significant endeavours you can undertake.
